ABOUT US

Hockey is a sport that gets in your blood and doesn't go away as time passes.  I started playing on the outdoor ice when I was 5 or 6 years old.  There was no such thing as youth hockey, little league, or any other organized youth sports program.  This continued until I was in the eighth grade, when I got involved with a forerunner of youth hockey that was established as an aid to the high school hockey program.  The purpose of this team was to help develop the high school team by playing in the spring and fall each year during the "off season".  Only players who would be eligible to play at the high school level were allowed to play.  After playing through high school and college, I continued to play at the international level as well as for local semi-pro teams and leagues.  Over the course of time, I married and was blessed with four sons, all of whom became hockey players.  I now have four grandsons who are all .... you guessed it .... Hockey players.

In 1983, with my first two boys on the ice and the possibility of two more in the wings, I became involved in sharpening skates.  I purchased a machine and began using it for myself, my own boys and a very few others.  After I gained a good amount of experience and confidence, I "went public" and offered the service to others in the late 80's.  I have continued since that time as a relatively low volume, part time sharpener.  In 2007, I added a second machine, to assure that sharpening would be available even if I have an unexpected machine outage.  A third machine was added in 2009 to offer the new Blademaster Flat Bottom Form Dressing as well as the standard radius of hollow.  In 2011, I expanded my services by adding a skate baking oven and a pneumatic rivet machine to replace rivets and eyelets on the skates.  A fourth machine was added in 2013 to provide additional flexibility in the services provided.  The latest machine added in 2019 is dedicated to the Blademaster Mark VI single point contouring system, which supports both single and various compound profiles to produce enhanced performance for the skater.  Because the sport is so costly for equipment, ice time, and transportation, I have tried to keep the skate sharpening aspect of playing hockey at a reasonable cost.  The prices that I charge are well below the local shops.

When my sons started playing for Salem Youth Hockey in 1981, I became involved with coaching at the youth level.  I progressed through the various coaching levels, attaining the Level IV (Advanced) Certification.  One of the Level IV Clinic requirements was to write a paper.  The subject that I chose concerned Handling the Puck Skills and their development.  I have added a link to this paper for information as the discussion is still pertinent.  I continued my involvement with Salem Youth Hockey through the 2003-2004 season, even though my youngest son finished with the 2000-2001 season.  A detailed summary of my playing and coaching experience can be found by clicking on this link.

When I began coaching at the Mite level, I started to track the statistics for my teams.  I did this for every team that I became involved with.  The stat sheets evolved over the years and became better and more complex.  Computer software development made this all possible.  The main purpose for compiling this information was as an aid for coaching to develop the individual and the team.

When Salem High School initiated a varsity hockey program in 1999, my youngest son was able to play for 2 years.  I volunteered to collect and publish the statistics for the team.  I have done this each year from the beginning of the program.  In the second year (2000-01), I added a couple of additional items and have held the data collected as a constant since then.  That is why there are items in the career and season leader sheets that reflect incomplete data from the 1999-2000 season.

The information is collected visually and from the official score sheet.  I also work with the coach and scorers to assure that accurate information is posted to the score sheet.  This information is updated after every game, posted to the web site, and given to the coaches in hard copy.  When I created this web site, I made it dual purpose.  The front end was set up to show the statistical information for the Salem High School hockey team, while the other section was created for skate sharpening information. Refinements to the site are  made on a continuing basis.  I attempt to keep this site as accurate and current as possible.

If you have any comments, suggestions, corrections, or anything else that you would like to offer, don't hesitate to let me know.
